Welcome to the Granite Planet, a nickname for the Canadian Province of Newfoundland.

Newfoundland is a province in the country of Canada. It is the seventeenth largest island in the world. It lies off the east coast of Canada in the North Atlantic ocean. Although virtually unknown to most people of the world, Newfoundland is a fascinating place and holds a unique position in World history. It's a land of many firsts.

  • The first European presence in North America with the landing of the Vikings at L'Anse aux Meadows, where the only authenticated site of Viking settlement in America exists.
  • First documented discovery of North America after Columbus in 1497 by John Cabot
  • First transatlantic cable station
  • First transatlantic wireless transmission by Marconi
  • First transatlantic flight by Alcock and Brown
  • Site of the discovery of a 2 rare Portuguese Astrolabes, a 350 year old navigational instrument and two of only four of its kind in the world
  • Its the only place in the world where there is an island on a pond on an island on a lake on an island in the ocean!!! (Grand Lake)

See some pictures of Newfoundland scenery (and other things) at my Photography pages.

Newfoundland is a great place for alpine skiing in the winter and sea-kayaking in the rest of the year. The Sea Links page shows sea-kayaking pictures from various place around the island. Sea Kayaking is rapidly growing activity here. Our long and varied coastline offers something for paddlers of any skill level.
